Andrii Kysenko’s team is working on a downed electricity cable in the rural Kherson area with a synchronised efficiency.

They are convinced that a shell was to blame because there is a crater not far from the pylon.

This powerline, which is 100 km (62 miles) long, was built through the Russian occupation’s perimeter two months ago.

Since the retreat of the Russian forces about two weeks ago, a daily routine for these engineers has replaced a once-every-five-year repair job.

Previously, work of this nature was only required in the wake of severe weather, according to Mr. Kysenko. “Right now, it feels like we’re starting from zero with the cable network.”

They are employed by DTEK, the largest energy company in Ukraine, and have already repaired 50 km of this line.

As they get closer to the Dnipro River, where there is more shelling, they anticipate the second half to be more challenging.

When it comes to working conditions, they don’t get much more difficult—not the least because they all have to wear flak jackets.

However, his team carefully clamps the cable together and hoists it into position.

It appears as though there is never-ending work to be done as the powerline stretches into the foggy horizon.

The engineer recalls that the initial days were difficult. “Cables would be ripped and there would be constant shelling.

But we’ve grown accustomed to it, so we must hold out hope that things will improve.

The burden on Ukraine’s already-stressed electrical grid grows while the Kherson region remains liberated.
